Betty Hilton-Nash’s Artist Statement

Tapestry offers the artist a richness and saturation of color that no other medium can match.  The successful use of color presents one of the biggest challenges to the artist and one of the biggest rewards to the viewer.  My work is often abstract which I feel highlights the use of color as a design element.  Lately, I have begun exploring images about threatened and endangered species.

I usually start with a photograph working with the image until I reach a weavable cartoon.  During this process, I often study historical tapestries for inspiration and try to incorporate a style or technique based on these older tapestries.  I leave many decisions of what the final image will look like until I am at the loom, employing weaverly techniques to produce shading, movement and the forms that make up the image.

Betty Hilton-Nash’s Biography

Betty Hilton-Nash began her tapestry career in 1991, working for a year as an apprentice/contract weaver for Pam Patrie Studios in Portland, Oregon.  She has continued her work as an artist weaver, creating and exhibiting her own designs in group shows nationally and internationally.

In addition to her weaving, Betty has served on the boards of regional tapestry groups and the American Tapestry Alliance.
