Artist Statement

The ‘Out of Joint’ series was inspired by invisible and abstract concepts such as emotional feelings in our relationships with people such as friends, family, and lovers. When we expect and evaluate our relationship with people, there are many conflicts. What is common in both defined and non-defined relationships is that the weight, speed, and temperature of emotions toward others are all different. Are others expressing true feelings in the expression on their faces and in the tones of their conversation? If not, why could the reason be? Am I treating the others with wholly truthful emotions? The contradictory and double-faced features in human are described as broken vessels. Similar to broken vessels, human share facial expressions and temperature in various shapes and different color tones.

Biography

Minsun Kim, was born in Seoul, South Korea. At thirteen, she decided to study art, and started to learn drawing with pencil and brush. Later, Kim fell in love with fiber art and tapestry. Deeply inspired by the hanging tapestries that surrounded her in South Korea and the atmosphere that they created, Kim decided to enroll in the M.A course in Woven Textiles at the Royal College of Art. According to Kim, what makes tapestries so complete is that they can express sophisticated emotions with simple techniques. Unlike paintings, tapestries give a warm feeling of drawing with thread. Within the varied techniques of textiles processes, such as surface design, knitting, embroidery and weaving, the delicacy, mood, and texture of woven textiles make them especially unique due to the qualities of yarn.
