Susan Martin-Maffei’s Artist Statement
Pandora’s Box Series: The human footprint has changed our natural world and affected animals large and small. Invasive species, disease, climate change, and disappearing environments endanger the balance of nature at alarming rates and to consequences yet unknown. There is beauty to be found in all things living and attention to its role in nature’s balance is crucial. This series attempts an awareness of both beauty and destruction.
Using the tapestry woven form of the simple tunic as a platform for human involvement each box contains references to its condition whether it be invasive, endangered, threatened, or on the decline. All animals are tapestry woven as well.
