Joan Griffin's Statement

Nature has always been the primary influence upon my work with a special interest in rock formations and plants.I particularly like to identify a small interesting design in nature and enlarge it in order to explore the detail with color and design often very different than the original.Sometimes very abstract other times more representational. As the weaving develops, the relationship between color and form is an important consideration to me. A combination of fine wools, silk and metallic yarns are often used because I like that they reflect the light differently.

Joan Griffin's Biography

Joan Griffin is a full time studio artist who weaves tapestries for exhibitions and commissions. She also teaches tapestry workshops in her studio several times each year. She began her art career as a watercolor painter but became a weaver about 30 years ago after an opportunity to learn to weave . After trying various types of multiple harness weaving, she concentrated on tapestry exclusively about 15 years ago in order to focus on imagery in her work. She weaves most commission work on her large 8 ft. wide loom but has recently begun experimenting with working quite small (2”sq) as a change of scale for exhibitions. Both sizes offer different but interesting challenges. She shows and sells her work throughout the country .
