Tapestry Artist Receives Award in 2009

ATA Award Winner: Kathe Todd-Hooker

     The ATA Award was proudly presented to Kathe Todd-Hooker for her tapestry So Sought After at the Intermountain Weaving Conference "Fiber Celebrated" exhibition at the Center of S.W. Studies Gallery, Fort Lewis College, Durango, Colorado, July 29 - September 20, 2009.

Artist's Statement

     When I work and design tapestry “IT” always comes back to two things-colour and/or stories based on questions dictated by the symbols of my past. The images in this piece are about questions, myths and emotion. I use the images and symbols that I grew up with which are based on the 3 different cultures that I have belonged to, lived in, and am ethnically. I grew up and was educated in a culture that highly valued symbolism, iconic images and its use. My tapestries are extremely personal and I often prefer to see the work viewed as decorative by others. Labels such as decorative, often lend a certain amount of privacy and cryptic layers to the meanings of the symbols. So, it is what it is. Long ago, I realized the conceits attached to the words, “decorative”, “art” and “craft”. I have chosen not to be involved in those particular discussions or labels of my work. The other side of the coin is that I enjoy hearing the meanings that others attach to my work. Sometimes it is quite interesting it amuses the inner Ikotomi that sometimes lives within my inner places.
