Pamela Gibson's Statement
Like most artists, my work consists of working out fundamental questions that are particular to me, but that I hope translate and resonate with viewers. If I could properly articulate what these questions are for me, perhaps I would be a writer rather than a visual artist. I plan my tapestries in a general way, but I am not one to work out every problem on paper before I confront my loom. I love answering questions, both technical and conceptual, along the way. Every tapestry is a journey, and serendipity plays a role.
I learn something about weaving, about the place of one person in the vast universe of time and the material world, and about fear and hope every time I sit down at my loom.
It is a scary proposition to spend 6 months or a year working on one tapestry, and not knowing until it is finally unrolled, how really it is all going to turn out. Sounds a bit like life, doesn’t it?
